2nd half surge carries Union past William Smith

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior guard Jacqueline Murphy scored back-to-back layups to put her team in front 40-36 with 11:26 remaining in their Liberty League opener against Union College. The Dutchwomen struck back with 14 unanswered points to take control of the contest on the way to a 63-51 victory.
 
Junior guard Kelsey McDonald started the game-changing swing with a 3-pointer. After nearly a minute of scoreless action, senior guard Shayla Madden drained a 3 to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.  McDonald followed with a jumper and Madden capped the run with a pair of triples to give Union a 50-40 lead with 7:14 to go.
 
William Smith (3-3, 0-1) made five straight points to halve their deficit, but the Dutchwomen countered with a 7-0 run to push their lead back into double digits. Union (5-3, 2-0) closed out the win by going 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes.
 
In the first half, the teams traded the lead back and forth with the Herons carrying a 29-26 lead into the break. William Smith's sophomore forward Chloe Hayter and junior guard Erin O'Brien shared game high honors with seven points at halftime.
 
The Herons struggled to finish their shots today, converting a season-low 27.8 percent. The Dutchwomen shot 39.3 percent from the floor.
 
Hayter led William Smith in the scoring column with 13 points. She also grabbed seven boards. Murphy recorded 12 points and seven boards. Sophomore forward Molly Breen grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Herons.
 
On the other side of the ledger, Madden produced a game-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds. Amy Loya added 13 points and nine boards while junior forward Brittney Kenney chipped in 11 points.
 
William Smith will play its final home game of the calendar year on Saturday, Dec. 15, when the Herons host Cortland at 1 p.m. Union is back on the floor on Tuesday, Dec. 11, to host Utica at 5 p.m.
