Herons defeat Haverford in first round of Epps Cup

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—
The William Smith squash team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Haverford in its first round match in the 2012 CSA Team National Championships Epps Cup. The Herons improved to 8-11 overall.

William Smith, the top seed in the Epps Cup and ranked No. 25 in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, picked up 3-0 wins at Nos. 2-8. In addition, first-year Molly Doran won by default at the No. 9 spot. The No. 32 Fords are now 4-13 overall this season.

First-year Andrea Tran led William Smith with an 11-3, 11-1, 11-6 victory at No. 2. Junior Lucia Rowe posted an 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 win at No. 3. At No. 4, junior Anne Habecker defeated the Fords' Roxanne Jaffe 11-8, 11-1, 11-7.

Junior Courtney Leous registered an 11-9, 11-2, 11-4 victory over Zoe Becker at No. 5. Sophomore Ginny McDermott earned an 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 win at No. 6, and senior Katie Riordan posted an 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 triumph at No. 7. She now shares a team-high for wins this season with nine. Senior Sarah Cutts defeated Haverford's Hannah Miller 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 at the No. 8 spot.

The Herons advance to the Epps Cup semifinal where they will take on St. Lawrence tomorrow, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m.
