Hobart sweeps singles, defeats Centre 7-2

HILTON HEAD, S.C.—
The Hobart College tennis team swept singles play, and defeated Centre 7-2 in a match played today at Port Royal Racquet Club. The Statesmen are now 4-0 on their spring break trip, and 8-2 overall this season.

Hobart came out of doubles play down 2-1. Junior Bruce Grant and first-year Michael Fields came away with the only doubles win for the Statesmen, edging their opponents 9-8 (7-2).

Hobart took control of the match in singles play. Junior Alex James breezed to the Statesmen's first singles victory, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Senior Kevin Bates followed. He was down 3-0 in his first set, but rallied for a 6-4, 6-1 win. Junior Sam DeLuccia defeated Centre's Xan Witherington in a close match at No. 2 (6-2, 3-6, 10-8). Grant picked up his second win of the day at the top singles spot. He won his first set 6-4, and then was down 5-2 in his second set but came back to win 7-5. Fields cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5, and senior Walter Green notched a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 to round out the Hobart lineup.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, March 22 when they take on Carleton at 6:30 p.m. in their final match in Hilton Head, S.C.
