Statesmen win 7th straight, top Bard 9-0

GENEVA, N.Y.—
The Hobart tennis team picked up its seventh straight win and its third straight 9-0 victory, sweeping visiting Bard in a match played at the HWS Tennis Center today.

The Statesmen finished their seven-match home stand with a perfect record. Hobart (15-3) moved up two spots to rank No. 14 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region Rankings. The Raptors are now 4-7 this season.

Junior Sam DeLuccia and senior Kevin Bates picked up the Statesmen's first win of the afternoon, blanking their competition 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Junior Peter Cruice and sophomore Ben Robinson followed with an 8-3 triumph at No. 3, and junior Alex James and senior Matt Hursh secured an 8-5 win at the top spot.

Bates swept his Bard opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Cruice followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6. DeLuccia registered a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2. Junior Bruce Grant posted a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the top singles spot. Hursh breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4, and first-year Michael Fields secured the sweep for Hobart topping  his competition 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3. Fields extended his win streak to seven matches.

The Statesmen will be back on the courts when they travel to take on Rensselaer on Saturday, April 21 at 3 p.m.
