Herons defeat St. Lawrence 13-8 on senior day

GENEVA, N.Y.—
Four different Herons recorded three points each as the William Smith lacrosse team defeated visiting St. Lawrence 13-8 in a Liberty League game played today on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The Herons improved to 7-7 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

Seniors Christine Abramo and Rosie Scheibel each notched three goals in the win. Senior Lucy Johnson and Junior Kathleen Ragan recorded two goals and an assist apiece. First-year Abbie West registered a goal and an assist, picked up three ground balls and won a team-high three draws.

First-year Rachel Hughes scooped up a game-high seven ground balls, and junior Liz Seidel produced a team-high four caused turnovers and grabbed four ground balls. Senior Callie Frelinghuysen logged four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and senior Megan Brophy scooped up three ground balls. Sophomore Maggie McNair played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with 11 saves, including four impressive saves on free position shots by St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence is now 7-6 overall and falls to 4-3 in the Liberty League. Kendall Harty led the Saints effort with three goals. Holly Noyes and Stephanie O'Rourke each chipped in a goal and an assist. Margie Bailey won a game-high four draws. Paige Powell played the entire game in goal for the Saints and stopped 16 shots.

The Herons started the game with a 5-0 run. Frelinghuysen started the scoring at 6:26, and Johnson followed with back-to-back tallies. Ragan capitalized on a free position at 12:17, and Scheibel scored her first of the day at 15:59. The Saints answered with goals from Mckenzie Collins and Alanna Piroli to get within three, but William Smith added two more tallies to take a 7-2 lead into the break.

West netted her 10th goal of the season just one minute into the second half after a pass from Johnson to stretch the Heron lead to six. Harty responded with back-to-back goals for St. Lawrence to make it 8-4 at 2:19. William Smith continued to pull away with a 4-0 run to take a 12-4 lead at 18:46. Abramo started things with an unassisted tally, and Gillan notched her 15th goal of the season on a free position. Scheibel scored her team-leading 35th of the year, and Ragan stretched her season total to 30. With 10:32 left in regulation, O'Rourke made it 12-5, but Ragan found Abramo, who tallied her third of the day to put the Herons back up by eight. St. Lawrence would not go away quietly as the Saints registered three more goals before the end of regulation, but that was as close as they could get.

William Smith held a 38-29 advantage in shots, and a 24-17 lead in ground balls. The Saints won 13 draws, while the Herons came away with 10. St. Lawrence was successful on 14-of-18 clear attempts, and William Smith finished 18-of-24 attempts.

The Herons will be back in action on Friday, April 27, when they travel to take on RIT in another Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
