The Hobart tennis team defeated Rensselaer 6-3 late on Saturday night in Troy, N.Y., to earn the Statesmen tennis program's 500th win. Hobart fell 9-0 at nationally ranked No. 22 Skidmore this afternoon.

Hobart, who is ranked No. 14 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region Rankings, is now 16-3 overall. The Statesmen have improved the all-time Hobart tennis program record to 500-379-10.

On Saturday, the Statesmen came out of doubles play with one point. Senior Kevin Bates and junior Sam DeLuccia edged their Engineer competition 8-6. First-year Michael Fields evened the match score with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5. Senior Matt Hursh followed with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 to put Hobart up 3-2.  Junior Alex James notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 to stretch the lead to 4-2. Senior Walter Green clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 4. He was down 4-3 in the second but surged to close out the set 6-4. Junior Sam DeLuccia earned the Statesmen's final triumph of the day 6-4, 5-7, 10-4.

This afternoon, the Statesmen fell to the Thoroughbreds, who are ranked No. 6 in the Northeast Region. James was edged in a close match 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 at No. 2.

Hobart will be back in action next weekend when the Statesmen host the Liberty League Tournament beginning on Saturday, April 28.
