Statesmen to host Liberty League Tournament this weekend

The Hobart tennis team will host the 2012 Liberty League Men's Tennis Championship Tournament this weekend, April 28-30. Matches will be played at the HWS Tennis Center. In the event of inclement weather, matches will take place on the indoor courts in Bristol Field House. Action will begin Saturday at 9 a.m.

The Statesmen enter the tournament with a 16-4 record, and are seeded third. They are ranked No. 14 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region Rankings. Hobart split two matches this past weekend, defeating Rensselaer 6-3 on Saturday, then fell to Skidmore 9-0 on Sunday to wrap up its regular season schedule.  First-year Michael Fields leads the team with a 17-3 singles record, including a 10-2 record at No. 5. Fields and junior Bruce Grant also lead Hobart with a 9-5 doubles record, including a 9-4 mark at the top spot.

Skidmore College comes to Geneva as the tournament's top seed with an 8-6 overall record. The Thoroughbreds are ranked No. 22 in Division III and No. 6 in the Northeast Region. Skidmore finished the regular season topping Hobart, but falling to No. 7 Middlebury 8-1. Oliver Loutsenko has played the majority of matches this season at the No. 1 singles spot, and Alec Hoblitzell and Jimmy Sherpa lead the Thoroughbreds at No. 1 doubles.

Vassar brings a 12-9 overall record into the weekend as the tournament's No. 2 seed. The Brewers, who are ranked No. 11 in the Northeast Region, swept the University of Rochester 9-0 to finish the regular season. Andrew Guzick leads Vassar with a 21-7 singles record, including a 15-5 mark at No. 1. Guzick has teamed up with his brother Ben Guzick for a 27-4 doubles record. The duo is 18-2 at No. 1 doubles.

RPI has an 8-8 record, and is the No. 4 seed.  The Engineers defeated Union 7-2 to cap their regular season.  Jarrett Regier comes into the tournament with an 12-6 record, including a 10-5 mark at No. 1 singles.  Regier and doubles partner, Brandon Mazzara, have posted a 14-5 overall doubles mark, including a 12-4 record at No. 1.

The No. 5 seed, RIT wrapped up the regular season with an 8-7 record. Last Saturday, the Tigers earned a 6-3 win over St. Lawrence.  Neville Billimoria leads RIT with an 8-3 overall singles record. Billimoria and Tennyson Saucedo have paired up to record a team-high five doubles victories. The duo has posted a 5-1 record.

St. Lawrence comes into the tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Saints (2-15) are coming of a 1-1 weekend, after a loss to RIT (6-3) and a win over Nazareth (5-4).  Sam Mullin leads the team posting six singles wins.  The doubles teams of Michael Hayden and Tom Luchars and Tom Timpone and Chris Rogers come into the tournament with five wins, at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.

Seventh-seeded Union will finish its regular season with a match against Hamilton this afternoon. The Dutchmen fell to Rensselaer 7-2 on Monday night and are now 4-6 overall. Grant Zaccereo has logged a team-high five singles wins.  Andrew Schwartz and Zaccereo have posted a 3-5 doubles record at No. 2.

Bard is playing in its first Liberty League tournament and is the No. 8 seed.  The Raptors (5-8) are coming off a 9-0 sweep of Sarah Lawrence last Saturday.  Kevin McDonald leads the team with a 7-6 singles record, including a 4-3 mark at No. 3. The pair of Joel Richmond and Erik Wallulis has notched a team-high three doubles victories this season.

Tournament play will begin when Skidmore takes on Bard at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28. Rensselaer will play RIT at noon, Vassar will take on Union at 3 p.m., and Hobart will square off with St. Lawrence in the final match of the day at 6 p.m. The semifinals will take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, and the championship match will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 30.
