Herons fall to #2 Cortland

GENEVA, N.Y.—
The nationally ranked No. 2 Cortland women's lacrosse team went on an 11-1 run to round out the first half and kept control from there to defeat William Smith 20-6 in a non-conference game played on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.

The Red Dragons improve to 9-1 this season, and the Herons are now 3-4 overall. William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, April 7 when the Herons host Union for a Liberty League contest beginning at 3 p.m.

Senior Rosie Scheibel led the William Smith effort with two goals. First-year Katie Sipple notched a goal and an assist. Senior Callie Frelinghuysen scooped up a team-high five ground balls, won a game-high seven draws and caused two turnovers. Senior Lucy Johnson scored a goal and won five draw controls. Sophomore Maggie McNair played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons and finished with a career-high 14 saves.

Maria Di Fato led Cortland with five goals and two assists. She chipped in a game-high six ground balls, won three draw controls and caused two turnovers. Lindsay Abbott produced four goals and three assists. She also scooped up four ground balls. Erin Kollar contributed three goals and an assist, and Gina Campese scored twice. Shauna Hutchinson played all 60 minutes in goal and stopped nine shots.

The Red Dragons got on the scoreboard first 3:16 into the first half, when Di Fato capitalized on a free position. Scheibel notched back-to-back goals to give William Smith a 2-1 lead at 7:30. Her second goal came on a free position shot. Cortland responded with goals from Di Fato and Jordan Miller, coming 31 seconds apart. At 13:20, junior Katie Dexter scored her fourth goal of the season after a pass from Sipple to tie the game at 3-3.

Cortland took control of the game, when a goal by Edward at 16:59 started an 11-1 run by the Red Dragons to close out the half. After six goals by Cortland including three by Abbott, Johnson scored her 11th of the season for William Smith to make it 9-4. However the Red Dragons tallied five more goals, including two by Di Fato, before halftime to go into the break with a 14-4 lead.

Cortland struck first in the second half. At 6:32, Kollar found the back of the net after feed from Abbott. Just under a minute later, Sipple scored for the Herons after a pass from senior Kathryn Gillan to make it 15-5. The Red Dragons rattled off the next five goals to stretch their lead to 15. First-year Megan Robson sent a shot into the back of the net with 45 seconds remaining for the final.

The Red Dragons held a 41-24 advantage in shots, and a 26-22 edge in ground balls. The Herons won 18 draws, while Cortland came away with 10. The Red Dragons were successful on 12-of-17 clears, while William Smith went 6-for-12.
