Herons to compete in Liberty League Tournament this weekend

The William Smith tennis team will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to compete in the 2012 Liberty League Women's Tennis Championship this weekend, May 4-6. Matches will be played on the Josselyn Tennis Courts.

The Herons enter the tournament with a 14-3 record, including a perfect 9-0 mark in the month of April. They are ranked No. 19 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region Rankings. William Smith wrapped up its regular season with and 8-1 victory over Ithaca. Senior Joanie Hilton leads the team with a 19-5 singles record, including a 10-3 mark at No. 3. Hilton and junior Kiara Ocasio also led William Smith with a 17-5 doubles record including a 14-2 mark in the top spot. The pair is riding a 10-match win streak.

The tournament's top seed, Skidmore, brings a 10-5 record into the weekend.  The Thoroughbreds, who are ranked No. 17 in Division III and No. 6 in the Northeast Region, finished the regular season by defeating St. Lawrence University 6-3. Nataly Mendoza and Lee Ford lead Skidmore in doubles, playing the majority of their matches at No. 1. Melissa Hirsch leads the team in singles, playing most of her matches at the top spot.

Host and No. 2 seed Vassar brings a 13-4 record into the tournament. Along with being ranked No. 10 in the Northeast Region, the Brewers are No. 27 in the nation.  Vassar wrapped up the regular season with a 7-2 victory over MIT. Ava Sadeghi leads the team with a 24-8 singles record this year, including a 14-2 mark at No. 2. She is the No. 17 ranked singles player in the Northeast Region. Lindsay Kantor and partner Hannah Van Demark have posted a 16-7 doubles mark splitting their time between No. 2 and No. 3.

No. 3 seed St. Lawrence comes into the tournament after posting a 12-3 record on the season. The Saints are currently ranked No. 16 in the Northeast Region.  They are led in singles by Elkie Vandenbeemt who posted a 14-1 mark at No. 2 and a 21-4 overall record this year.  Vandenbeemt along with her partner Hillary Drewry have posted a 20-7 doubles mark including 10-5 record at the No. 1 spot.

Rensselaer, the tournament's No. 5 seed, brings a 12-4 record into the weekend.  The Engineers closed out their season with a 9-0 sweep of Union on Tuesday. Casey Olsen has posted a team-best 13-5 singles record, including an 11-4 mark at the top spot.  Lexi Rindone and Christina Ciamarra have registered the RPI's best doubles record at 15-5, playing the majority of their matches at No. 2.

Sixth-seeded RIT wrapped up the regular season with a 4-10 overall record. Last Saturday the Tigers closed out their regular season with a loss to St. Lawrence. Maite Vera leads RIT playing the majority of her matches at the top singles spot. She pairs with Sara Bjork to lead the Tigers at No. 1 doubles.

Union, the No. 7 seed, enters the Liberty League tournament with a 6-7 record overall.  The Dutchwomen closed out their regular season Tuesday night with loss to RPI.  Dee Dee Gaudian leads Union with an 8-4 singles record, including a 6-3 mark at No. 4. Elizabeth Lehmann and Lauren Main have posted a team-best 8-4 mark at No. 3 doubles.

No. 8 seed Bard is playing in its first Liberty League tournament.  The Raptors (7-6) are coming off of a fifth place finish at the SUNY New Paltz tournament last weekend. Jean Wong leads Bard with an 8-4 singles record, including a 7-4 mark at No. 2. The pair of Wong and Julia DeFabo have notched a team-high four doubles wins at No. 1. Sofia Commito and Madeline Turner have also recorded four doubles victories at No. 2.

Tournament action will begin when Skidmore takes on Bard at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 4. William Smith will also play Rensselaer beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday.  At 2 p.m. St. Lawrence will square off with RIT, and Vassar will take on Union. The semifinals will take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5 and the championship match is slated for 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 6.
