Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 13 William Smith College field hockey team got a five-point night from senior
Annie Kietzman and cruised to a 7-2 victory over Oswego State to open the season on McCooey Field.
Kietzman netted a pair of goals and assisted on a third. Junior
Taylor Cappello added a goal and an assist. Junior
Julia Simmons, junior
Margaret McConnell, junior
Melanie O'Connor, and sophomore
Sarah Tompson also found the back of the cage for the Herons.
Sophomore Courtney Collins and first-year Lisa O'Callaghan produced goals for the visiting Lakers (0-1).
William Smith opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Cappello and Kietzman worked a nifty give-n-go that ended with Kietzman putting away a shot from just 3 yards off the goal line. Four minutes later, Simmons tipped home a lifted shot by sophomore
Caitlin Moran.
In the 14th minute, the Herons got their first penalty corner goal of the year when junior
Morgan Atanasio set up McConnell for a blast from the top of the circle. Tompson scored in a similar fashion in the 23rd minute, sending a screamer from the top of the arc into the lower right corner of the cage.
William Smith led 4-0 at halftime after outshooting Oswego 14-0. The Herons enjoyed a 29-3 advantage in shots for the game.
Less than five minutes into the second half, O'Connor scored to give the home team a five-goal cushion.
Collins broke up the shutout in the 41st minute with a bouncing shot that hopped through traffic.
Kietzman (53rd minute) and Cappello (60th) sandwiched goals around O'Callaghan's strike in the 57th minute to close out the scoring.
Sophomore goalie
Catherine Hare started the game and earned the win for William Smith, despite not facing a shot in 35 minutes of work. Senior
Taryn Little made one save in relief. Oswego first-year goalies Grace Lombardi (6 Svs, 4 GA, L) and Nicole Moccaldi (9 Svs, 3 GA) also played one half apiece.
The Herons will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they host Oneonta St. The Lakers will visit Rochester at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2.
