GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team doubled up Manhattanville 6-3 in the first game of the William Smith Classic, becoming the ninth NCAA Division III program to record 500 all-time victories. Senior
Annie Kietzman and juniors
Taylor Cappello and
Margaret McConnell each recorded four-point games.
The Herons jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead on a pair of goals by Cappello and one from Kietzman. Cappello opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing a cross from sophomore
Caitlin Moran. Two minutes later, Cappello fired a shot between a defender's legs and then through the keeper's legs for her fourth goal of the season. In the 23rd minute, Kietzman added her name to the box score by converting a penalty stroke.
William Smith outshot Manhattanville 12-1 in the first half.
In the 38th minute, Amanda DeChent broke up the shutout when she laced a shot from the right of the cage just inside the far post. Melissa Goncalves earned the assists.
The Herons got the goal back on a penalty corner in the 42nd minute. Kietzman inserted to junior stopper
Morgan Atanasio and McConnell drove it into the back of the cage.
Rylee McGuire scored for the Valiants to make it a 4-2 game with about 20 minutes remaining in the match, but William Smith converted another Kietzman-to-Atanasio-to-McConnell penalty corner for a 5-2 lead.
Manhattanville closed the gap to two once more when DeChant finished a flourish in front of the Heron cage, that included a defensive save for senior
Sara Helmer.
Junior
Julia Simmons closed out the scoring in the 69th minute, batting home a feed from sophomore
Mollie Kenerson.
William Smith sophomore goalie
Catherine Hare earned the win without making a save in the first half. Senior
Taryn Little made two stops in the second half. The Valiants' Amy Hilton went the distance making seven saves.
With today's victory, William Smith joins TCNJ, Swarthmore, Elizabethtown, Messiah, Lebanon Valley, Salisbury, Cortland, and Wooster as the only NCAA Division III field hockey programs to boast 500 all-time wins.
The Herons (3-1) will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 16, when they host Lebanon Valley at 3 p.m. The Dutchmen (1-3) defeated St. Lawrence 3-1 in the second game of the William Smith Invitational. The Valiants and Saints will kick things off on Sunday at 1 p.m.
