#19 Herons rout Dutchmen 7-2

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.The 19th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team closed out the 2012 William Smith Classic in impressive fashion, routing Lebanon Valley College 7-2 this afternoon. Five different Herons hit the back of the cage led by senior Annie Kietzman's two-goal, two-assist performance.

William Smith earned its third straight win by jumping out to a 3-0 lead. First-year Madison Finn got the Herons on the board in the ninth minute when she finished a long, bouncing cross from junior Amy David. Exactly 20 minutes into the match, Kietzman took a shot that looped up into the air off a defender's stick, arching over the Dutchmen's goalie, Chloe Baro. Just 24 seconds later, Kietzman drive another shot toward the cage. The offering appeared to be headed wide, but a diving redirect by junior Taylor Cappello tucked the ball inside the far post for a 3-0 lead.

LVC's Kelsey Miller tipped a shot by Caitlin Vasey in the 24th minute for her second goal of the season. The assist was Vasey's 50th of her career, making her the 18th player in NCAA Division III history to hit that plateau.

William Smith (4-1) restored its three-goal lead in the 31st minute when junior Margaret McConnell scored on a penalty corner assisted by junior Morgan Atanasio and Kietzman. The Herons carried a 4-1 lead into halftime.

In the 40th minute, David sent a cross from deep in the corner that Kietzman was able to run onto and tip in from point-blank for her team-leading seventh goal of the year. David scored, assisted by Cappello, in the 45th minute to make it a 6-1 game.

The Dutchmen (2-4) earned their second goal in the 59th minute when Kirsten Martzall fed Nicole Vasiliu, but Cappello seal the victory by batting home a long pass from junior Melanie O'Connor.

Shots were even at 18 apiece and William Smith had a slim 9-8 edge in penalty corners. The difference in the game was the goalkeeping. Heron sophomore Catherine Hare matched her career-high with 12 saves to get the victory. At the other end of the field, Baro stopped two of the six shots she faced in the first half and Kendra Moll turned back two of the five she faced in the second half.

The Herons will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, when they host Ithaca. Lebanon Valley will visit Susquehanna on the same day, starting at 7 p.m.
