Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 19th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team extended its winning streak to four straight games with a 5-0 non-conference victory over Ithaca College on McCooey Field this afternoon. Junior forward
Taylor Cappello led a dominating performance by the Herons with a pair of goals.
William Smith (5-1) enjoyed a lopsided 34-5 advatange in shots and took eight penalty corners to just two for the Bombers (4-3). Sophomore goalie
Catherine Hare made one save in 44 minutes of work to earn the win, while senior Tayrn Little posted three saves to complete the shutout. Ithaca's starting keeper, senior Kelly Singleton, turned in a strong effort, despite the score. She made 16 saves on 21 shots in 54 minutes.
The Herons wasted little time opening the scoring. Junior
Melanie O'Connor weaved her way through traffic with some nifty ball handling and put a shot past Singleton just 2:37 into the match. Four minutes later, Cappello unleashed a shot on the run from the top of the circle for a 2-0 William Smith lead. Junior
Amy David ripped a shot from the left slot on a penalty corner in the 25th minute. Junior
Julia Simmons was credited with the assist.
Less than five minutes into the second half,
Annie Kietzman led a 2-on-1 breakaway, racing down the left sideline. Her crossing pass found its way to Cappello, who poked it home for her eighth goal of the season. In the 50th minute, Kietzman scored her eight goal of the season on another breakaway.
Kietzman, who has at least three points in every match this season, raised her career point total to 98 (34g, 30a). Only 11 Herons have recorded 100 career points.
William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Herons host No. 18 Rochester (8-0) in a Liberty League match.
