The William Smith College Squash team picked up wins over Virginia and St. Lawrence today at the Smith College Tournament in Northampton, Mass. The Herons, who are ranked No. 28 in the most recent College Squash Association Rankings, improved to 6-4 overall.
William Smith earned a 7-2 win over No. 32 Virginia in their first match of the day. First-year
Rachel Newman led the Herons with a 9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-1 win at No. 1. Senior
Olivia Beckwith cruised to an 11-5, 11-1, 11-8 victory at No. 3. Senior
Courtney Leous topped her competition 11-2, 11-3, 12-10 at No. 4. Senior
Anne Habecker notched an 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 triumph at No. 5, and first-year
Justine Shank edged her opponent 12-10, 11-5, 5-11, 6-11, 11-9 at No. 6. At No. 7, first-year
Erin Casey logged an 11-7, 11-9, 11-4 win, and sophomore
Molly Doran recorded an 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-2 victory at No. 8.
In their second match, the Herons edged No. No. 27 St. Lawrence 5-4, avenging a 4-5 loss to the Saints back on Nov. 17 in the Bard Round Robin. Newman rallied for her second win of the day at the top spot (8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-9). Sophomore
Andrea Tran registered an 11-9, 7-11,11-8, 11-8 at No. 2. William Smith earned wins at Nos. 6-8 to secure the victory. Shank tallied her second win of the afternoon, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4 at No. 6, and Casey posted a 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 victory at No. 7. Doran defeated her St. Lawrence opponent 11-6, 14-12, 11-5 at No. 8.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Jan. 27 for the final match of the tournament.
