Hobart College senior offensive lineman
Michael Green is a candidate for the National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments, and a semifinalist for the 2013 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth, and presented to the top scholar-athlete in collegiate football.
Â
Green is one of 170 nominees, the most since the NFF raised the nomination standard to a cumulative grade point average of 3.2. He is one of 39 nominees with a GPA of 3.8 or higher, one of 39 from Division III, one of 29 to have earned Capital One Academic All-America honors (Green was a second team pick in 2012), and one of 105 that currently serve as a team captain.
Â
In addition to the GPA requirement, nominees must also have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 16 recipients, and the results will be announced via a national press release on Thursday, October 31. Each recipient will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and they will vie as finalists for the 2013
William V. Campbell Trophy. Each member of the 2013 National Scholar-Athlete Class will also travel to New York City to be honored Dec. 10 during the 56th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria. One member of the class will also be announced live at the event as the winner of the
William V. Campbell Trophy.
A two-year starter at center, Green has played in 24 games during his Hobart career. In addition to Academic All-America honors, he is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District honoree and a three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection. Green has helped the Statesmen win back-to-back Liberty League Championships, advancing to the 2012 NCAA quarterfinals.
Â
Last season, Hobart posted the program's first undefeated regular season (10-0) in 55 years. Green and his fellow linemen allowed just eight sacks in 13 games, ranking 10th in the nation in sacks allowed per game. The 2012 Statesmen also led the league in total offense (414.3 yds/g), first downs (21.2/g), third down conversion (47.3%), fourth down conversion (67.9%), and time of possession (34:35).
Green and the Statesmen are off to another stellar start, winning the first three games of 2013. Hobart is averaging 293.0 yards rushing per game and the offensive line has allowed just one sack.
Â
Ranked fifth in the nation by the AFCA and seventh by D3football.com, Hobart (3-0, 1-0 Liberty League) will return to Boswell Field to host WPI (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
Â
The Statesmen will don special camouflage jerseys to honor our nation's active military and military veterans. All ticket and parking proceeds will be donated to Honor Flight, which helps America's veterans travel free of charge to Washington, D.C., to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
Â
The game will be broadcast on WEOS-FM (89.5/90.3 in Geneva). Fans can also follow the action online with All-Access Video and Live Stats.
