Littler’s big day gives Scatton her 400th win at William Smith

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Junior Kayla Littler produced a career-high five points to lead the third-ranked William Smith College field hockey team to its 10th win of the season, a 4-1 Liberty League triumph over Union College at McCooey Field today. The win was the 400th of Sally Scatton's Heron career.

The match got off to a slow start, but in the 19th minute, momentum turned in the Herons' favor. The offensive was sparked by the sub-ins of Littler, first-year Katie Meyer, and first-year Alessandra Patrizio. The Herons (10-0, 3-0) first goal came at 21:06 on a shot from Alessandra Patrizio. She received a pass from the right corner of the arc from Littler, sticking in her second goal of the season.

The Herons kept the offense going and quickly responded with another goal at 22:28. Littler buried her first goal of the season off a rebound during a scramble in front of the cage. The scoring during the first period was completed by Patrizio's shot from the center of the arc at 25:52, giving her her first collegiate multi-goal game.

Like the first half, it took both teams awhile to get started in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Union sophomore Maggie Ferrari scored on a crossing pass from first-year Sarah Medd.

Both teams had their chances during the second period but the Herons never yielded control of the game. William Smith added the day's final tally just before the final buzzer. The goal came off the stick of Littler, deflecting a shot by senior Margaret McConnell.

Heron first-year Amy Feda made four saves to earn the win in goal, while Molly McCune turned back 10 shots at the other end of the field.

Scatton picked up her 400th overall win on Sept. 22, a 5-0 rout of Lebanon Valley. Her first season as a collegiate head coach was spent at Wells College, where she guided the express to a 3-11-1 mark. Scatton joined the Herons in 1988 and is 400-121-3 since arriving on the Geneva campus, 403-132-4 overall.

The loss drops Union to 3-7 on the year, 0-2 in the league.

William Smith will play its next five matches on the road, beginning with a short trip to Rochester on Oct. 11. The Liberty League match with the Yellowjackets is set to begin at 4 p.m. The Dutchwomen will return home to host Hartwick on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m.
