Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior forward Danielle Conklin scored four goals and assisted on a fifth to lead SUNY New Paltz to a 5-2 victory over William Smith College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship on McCooey Field tonight.

The Hawks improved to 14-8 and advance to the second round where they will play Bowdoin College in Montclair, N.J., on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. The Herons end the season with a 15-5 record.

In the 10th minute, Conklin opened the scoring with a beautiful reversed chipped shot that traveled from the left side of the field into the upper right corner of the cage.

William Smith nearly answered in the 14th minute, but senior
Julia Simmons' shot was cleared off the goal line by junior Emily Vanacore.

In the 20th minute, Conklin pounced on a rebound near the left post and batted it home for a 2-0 New Paltz lead. Six minutes later, Conklin set up sophomore Dani Ackerman's 19th goal of the season to give the visitor's a three-goal advantage.

In the 28th minute, the Herons were able breakthrough on a penalty corner. Sophomore
Cory Connolly deflected senior
Margaret McConnell's shot from the top of the arc to make it a 3-1 game. It was Connolly's ninth goal of the season.

Conklin got the goal back before the break, completing a hat trick 30:48 into the match.

Just 83 seconds into the second half, Conklin sticked home a feed from sophomore Jessica Caruana for her team-leading 27th goal of the year. In the 59th minute, senior Alicia Aragosa nearly gave the Hawks a sixth goal, but McConnell logged her team-leading third defensive save of the year.

With 7:28 remaining in the match, Connolly set up senior
Taylor Cappello's 15th goal of the season to make it a 5-2 match. William Smith played the final 5:54 with an empty net, but the Herons were only able to generate one shot on goal against the stout New Paltz defense. Senior goalie Antonija Pjetri finished the match with eight saves and the win.
