The William Smith squash team earned a 7-2 win over Vassar in the first match of the 2013 CSA Team Championship this afternoon. The Herons, the No. 2 seed in the D Division, improved to 9-7 overall this season.
It's the second time William Smith has topped Vassar this year. The Herons posted a 6-3 win over the Brewers back on Nov. 18 at the 2012 Bard Round Robin.
William Smith, who is ranked No. 26 in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, will advance to take on St. Lawrence in the second round. The No. 27 Saints topped No. 30 Georgetown 7-2 in their first round match this morning. Tomorrow's match will be the third time that St. Lawrence and William Smith have met this season. On Nov. 17, the Herons fell 4-5 to the Saints, and on Jan. 26, William Smith edged St. Lawrence 5-4.

Rachel Newman led the Herons with a 12-10, 11-6, 11-6 win at the top spot. She leads the team with 11 wins this season. Senior
Olivia Beckwith notched an 11-9, 11-7, 11-6 victory at No. 3, and classmate
Anne Habecker topped her competition 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7 at No. 4. It was Beckwith's sixth victory of the season, and the eighth of the year for Habecker.

Courtney Leous also logged her eighth win of the year with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-3 win at No. 5, and first-year
Justine Shank picked up her 10th victory of her rookie season at No. 6 (11-4, 11-9, 11-4). Sophomore
Molly Doran defeated her Brewer opponent 11-8, 11-4, 6-11, 11-3 at No. 8 for her 10th win of the season, and first-year
Hannah Meyer recorded an 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7 triumph at No. 9. It was Meyer's third win as a Heron.
William Smith will take on St. Lawrence tomorrow at Yale University at 9 a.m.
