Hobart headed to RIC for NCAA opener

The Hobart College basketball team will travel to Providence, R.I., to take on Rhode Island College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 2. Ticket prices will be announced later in the week.
 
The Statesmen (21-6) earned an automatic bid into the 62-team field that will vie for the national championship. Hobart won the Liberty League regular season championship with a 15-1 record and secured its automatic berth in its second straight NCAA tournament with a 72-63 win over Rensselaer in the Liberty League Tournament Championship game. The Statesmen are riding a school record 13-game winning streak into the Big Dance.
 
Junior forward Richie Bonney leads the Statesmen in scoring (19.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). Senior guard Stefan Thompson runs the point, producing 16.1 ppg and a league-leading 5.3 apg. Junior guard Joe Gibbons, the Most Outstanding Player of the Liberty League Tournament, is the third Statesmen in double digits, contributing 11.5 ppg.
 
Hobart is making its third NCAA tournament appearance. Last year, the Statesmen defeated Ohio Wesleyan 64-60 in the first round, before falling in overtime at fifth-ranked Cabrini 90-88. Hobart's first NCAA Championship appearance in 2001 also ended in the second round when Brockport got a shot to go at the buzzer for a 77-75 win. The Statesmen received a first round bye that year. Overall, Hobart is 1-2 in the NCAAs.
 
Bonney and Thompson were unanimous first team All-Liberty League selections this season with Thompson also taking home the league's Player of the Year award. Gibbons earned a spot on the All-Liberty League second team.
 
Rhode Island College (25-3) was ranked 16th in the nation in the latest D3hoops.com poll (through Feb. 17). The Anchormen have won nine straight games, securing the Little East regular season title with a 13-1 mark and the LEC Tournament championship and its accompanying automatic bid with a 60-53 victory over Keene State.
 
Junior guard Nyheem Sanders leads three RIC players averaging double figures in the scoring column (11.4 ppg). Senior guard Tahrike Carter adds 10.7 ppg and team-highs of 6.6 rpg and 3.8 apg. Sophomore forward Chris Burton adds 10.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg and a team-high 1.3 bpg.
 
The Anchormen are making their seventh straight and 10th overall NCAA tournament appearance. RIC's all-time record in the NCAAs is 11-11.
