Heron lacrosse rallies to defeat Springfield 10-8

Box Score CLERMONT, Fla.—The William Smith lacrosse team used a 5-0 run in the second half to rally for a 10-8 win over Springfield College in a game played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., this morning. Sophomore Katie Sipple and senior Katie Dexter led the Herons with two goals and an assist a piece.

Prior to the start of the game, both teams observed a moment of silence to honor the victims of a tragic bus accident involving the Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team on March 16.

Senior Marissa Potter and sophomore Abbie West each added two goals. Sophomore Rachel Hughes grabbed a game-high three ground balls, won three draws and caused two turnovers. Potter also recorded three draws and Sipple caused two turnovers. Senior Kathleen Ragan and first-year Hannah Connolly each logged two assists. First-year Marina Guigli stopped 10 shots in all 60 minutes in goal for William Smith.

Connie Nielsen led the Pride with a game-high five goals. Meghan Flanagan chipped in two goals and won a game-high six draws. Anne Versprille played all 60 minutes in goal for Springfield and finished with nine saves.

West scored first after a quick pass from Connolly for William Smith at 1:22. Nielsen answered with back-to-back goals for the Pride to make it 2-1. The duo of West and Connolly struck again to even things at two at 5:50. At 15:08, Kelly Gallo found the back of the net to put Springfield up 3-2.  Dexter logged a free position tally at 18:32 to tie the game for a second time. The Pride notched two more goals before the break to take a 5-3 lead.

Just 1:51 into the second half, Nielsen registered her fourth goal of the morning to stretch the Pride's lead to three. At 3:38 Ragan fed Sipple for a man-up goal and just under two minutes later first-year Geneva Calder sent a shot into the back of the net to get William Smith within one.  At 10:48, an unassisted tally by Nielsen made it 7-5.

Then the Herons came storming back with a 5-0 run. Sophomore Cat Gorman started things blasting a shot into the back of the net at 11:45 to make it 7-6. Just under a minute later, Potter tied things up with a free position tally. At 13:20 Sipple took a feed from Ragan and sent home her shot to give William Smith an 8-7 lead. Dexter set up Potter who put the Herons up by two at 23:30. Dexter scored a goal of her own with three minutes left in the game to make it 10-7. With 1:52 remaining, Flanagan took advantage of a free position to get Springfield within two, but that was as close as the Pride could get.

The Herons enjoyed a 27-21 advantage in shots and a 15-11 edge in ground balls. The Pride won 11 draws, while William Smith came away with nine. The Herons were successful on 12 of 13 clear attempts. Springfield went 12-for-18.

William Smith will be back in action on Thursday, March 21 when it takes on Buffalo State at 4 p.m.
