Box Score The No. 3 Cortland women's lacrosse team scored five straight goals to close out the first half with a 7-1 lead and went on to defeat William Smith 15-5 in a non-league game played this afternoon in Cortland, N.Y.
It was the Herons second game of the season, and their second nationally ranked opponent.
Marilyn Farrell led Cortland with two goals and two assists in the Red Dragons' season opener. Erica Geremia chipped in two goals and an assist. Tara Monaghan, Taylor Robinson and Gina Campese each added two goals. Monaghan also came up with a game-high six draws. Jessica Lavelle scooped up a game-high five ground balls. Shauna Hutchinson played the opening 56:53 in goal for Cortland and made five saves. Liz Ingalls came in for the final 3:07.

Kathleen Ragan led the Herons (0-2) with three goals. Sophomore

Campese started the scoring for the Red Dragons at 1:47. Geremia made it 2-0 after a feed from Farrell. First-year
Hannah Connolly put the Herons on the board at 12:21. With 9:20 left in the half, Campese started a 5-0 run for Cortland. Farrell chipped in two goals.
The Red Dragons continued their run, starting off the second half with five more goals. Farrell tallied a goal and an assist in the stretch, as Cortland took a 12-1 lead 12 minutes into the second. Katie Sipple. The Red Dragons responded with three goals of their own to stretch their lead to 15-4. Liz Beville earned two assists in the spurt. With 46 seconds left in the game, Ragan tallied her third of the night. She shares the team-high with four goals this season.
Cortland held a 30-18 advantage in shots and a 15-7 lead in draws. The Herons held an 18-15 lead in ground balls. William Smith was successful on 10-of-20 clear attempts, while the Red Dragons went 12-for-16.
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 when they travel to take on Nazareth in another non-league game at noon.
