William Smith lacrosse cruises to a 17-6 victory over Clarkson

Box Score The William Smith College lacrosse team used an 11-0 run that carried over from the first half to the second to defeat Clarkson 17-6 in a Liberty League game played in Potsdam, N.Y., this afternoon.

William Smith improved to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference. The Golden Knights are now 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League.

Senior Kathleen Ragan led the Herons with seven points on four goals and three assists. Senior Marissa Potter scored a game-high five goals, won five draws and caused two turnovers. First-year Hannah Connolly chipped in four goals and an assist. Sophomore Katie Sipple logged a goal and two assists, and classmate Abbie West tallied two goals. Sophomores Rachel Hughes and Cat Gorman each scooped up four ground balls.

First-year Marina Guigli started and played 56:32 in goal and made 10 saves. She added four ground balls. Classmate Allie O'Hara came in for 3:28.

Alyssa Cristaldi led Clarkson with two goals and two assists. She also picked up three ground balls. Noelle Miller won a team-high four draws. Katie VanDeValk chipped in a goal and an assist. Marissa Mastronardi, Christine Wright, and Kerrie Cline each scored one goal for the Golden Knights. Kara DiNatale played 28:44 in goal and made two saves. Stephanie Lynch played 31:16 and stopped six shots.

Potter started the scoring for the Herons 1:10 into the game with a free position goal. Clarkson responded with goals from Cristaldi and VanDeValk to take a 2-1 lead. William Smith took advantage of a man-up situation to tie the game at two, with a goal from Potter off a feed from Connolly. Cristaldi scored her second of the day on a free position to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 advantage. Connolly and Ragan scored back-to-back goals to push the Herons to a 4-3 lead. With 13:09 left in the first, Kerrie Cline scored after a pass from Cristaldi to knot the game at four.

With 11:14 left in the opening half, the Herons took control of the game with their 11-0 run. Connolly started the scoring spree followed by Potter's third goal of the day. Ragan notched three goals in a row to make it 9-4. Connolly scored again with 4:54 left in the first, and Potter found the back of the net to give William Smith a 11-4 lead at the break. West continued the William Smith run with back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the second half. Goals by Connolly and Potter closed out the run, giving the Herons a 15-4 lead.

Eight minutes into the second, Wright broke through for Clarkson. Just 1:09 later, Ragan fed Sipple to make it 16-5. With 12:25 left in the game, Mastronardi scored after a quick pass from VanDeValk, but with 9:50 remaining, first-year Meg Hannan found the back of the net after an assist from sophomore Hayley Braun.

William Smith held a 31-20 advantage in shots and a 17-8 lead in draws. Each team picked up 21 ground balls. The Herons were successful on 13-of-14 clear attempts. Clarkson went 10-for-14.

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, April 16 when they host No. 13 Ithaca for a non-league game beginning at 5 p.m.
