William Smith SAAC presents Appreciation Awards

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) presented its annual appreciation awards at the William Smith Athletics Awards Banquet this evening.

Jeff Henderson was presented the Community Member Appreciation Award. He has served the Herons as a volunteer coach with the swimming and diving team and has been involved with the rowing team's coaches in planning a development camp for U23 rowers. Henderson, who is the race director for the Musselman Triathlon and the Seneca7, has also provided opportunities for student-athletes to take on leadership roles with those events.

Professor of Geoscience John Halfman took home the Faculty Appreciation Award. His dedication and support of William Smith student-athletes is clearly on display through his regular attendance at a wide range of sporting events, regardless of the weather conditions. Halfman is an advocate for student-athletes and an inspiring educator.

The Staff Appreciation Award was given to Carol DeVaney. She worked as a receptionist in the Colleges' Buildings and Grounds Department for more than 43 years before retiring at the end of 2012. DeVaney's efficient and diligent work on behalf of athletics was a hallmark of her service to the Colleges and she was and continues to be a regular in the stands at Heron sporting events.

The William Smith SAAC consists of two student-athletes from each of the College's 11 varsity teams. The purpose of the SAAC is to provide a mechanism for communication and to promote activity between student-athletes, the athletic department, and the campus community.
