Richie Bonney passed Hall of Famer Carmen Genovese '70 and Rich Kolmetz '77 on the Hobart all-time scoring list with 17 points against Delaware Valley College tonight, but the Aggies were able to eke out a 74-73 win in the opening game of the Sponaugle New Year Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College.
The Statesmen (5-3) trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and by as many as 12 in the second half, but rallied to tie the game at 71 with 1:25 remaining. DVC (6-5) went back in front by making 3-of-4 free throw attempts forcing Hobart to seek a 3-pointer in the final eight seconds of regulation. Junior guard
Trey Blanding got trapped by a double team near the top of the arc and couldn't find a teammate as the seconds ticked away. He launched a buzzer beater that was good, but his pivot foot was inside the 3-point line, leaving the Statesmen one-point shy of overtime.
Bonney logged his sixth consecutive double-double with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. He raised his career point total to 1,303, two more than Kolmetz and 15 more than Genovese. Hall of Famer Sonny Wilson is next on the list with 1,315 points. Bonney was also credited with three blocked shots. He appeared to get a fourth with 10 seconds remaining, but he was whistled for a foul that sent Chris Moran (14 pts) to the line. He made the second of his two freebies, putting the Aggies ahead 72-71.
Francis Arnold came up with a steal on the inbound play and Hobart fouled Nate Brown to give Delaware Valley two more shots from the stripe. He made both to make it a 3-point game and put the finishing touch on a 16-point effort. Arnold led all scorers with 20 points in addition to a team-high six rebounds, a team-high five assists, and a game-high five steals.
DVC broke the game open with a 15-4 run in the first half that turned a 2-point Aggie lead into a 39-26 advantage. Arnold sank a 3-pointer with 2:28 to go to make it 44-30. Hobart scored the final eight points of the half to go into the break trailing by six. Senior guard
Joe Gibbons scored four of his team-high 18 points in the run.
Delaware Valley pushed its edge back out to 12, taking a 55-43 lead on a pair of Brown free throws. The Statesmen struck back with the game's next 10 points, including five from Gibbons and a 3-pointer from junior guard

The Aggies remained in the lead and held a 71-67 edge with 2:14 left. junior guard
Andrew Hoy (12 pts) drilled a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game and then came up with a steal that led to a trip to the charity stripe for Blanding. He made the first to tie the game and missed the second, setting up the nail-biting ending. Blanding had six points and a game-high six assists.
Hobart dominated the glass, outrebounding Delaware Valley 42-31, but the Aggies were plus five in turnover margin.
The Statesmen will face Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in tomorrow's consolation game at 5:30 p.m.
