#8 Amherst uses strong second half to defeat Herons

Box Score CLERMONT, Fla.—The William Smith College lacrosse team trailed No. 8 Amherst College 3-2 at halftime, but the Jeffs scored six second half goals to top William Smith 9-2 in a non-league game played today at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.

The Herons fall to 0-4, and Amherst improves to 4-0 this season. Sophomores Hannah Connolly and Emy Stratton scored for William Smith. Junior Rachel Hughes scooped up a team-high three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Sophomore Geneva Calder won two draws, picked up a ground ball and caused a turnover. First-year goalie Sarah Honan turned aside nine shots in all 60 minutes in goal.

Rachel Passarelli led the Jeffs with four goals. Alex Phili added three goals and an assist as well as three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Meghan Mills picked up three ground balls. Priscilla Tyler won a game-high five draws. Christy Forest played all 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves.

Passarelli started the game with back-to-back goals for Amherst, putting the Jeffs up 2-0 6:27 in. Philie made it 3-0 with 12:45 left in the first half. Connolly broke through for William Smith with 8:25 on the clock, and Stratton followed with a free position goal just under a minute later to make it 3-2 going into the break. It was Stratton's first goal this season.

Mia Haughton logged a free position goal to open the second half for Amherst, and Philie added a woman-up goal to make it 5-2. It appeared that the Jeffs had struck again with 22:03 on the clock, but it was disallowed due to an illegal stick. Almost three minutes later, the Herons seemed to have made it 5-3, but their goal was also disallowed due to an illegal stick. Amherst added four more goals to close out the game.

The Jeffs held a 24-10 advantage in shots and a 14-10 lead in ground balls. The Jeffs controlled the draws, notching a 10-3 lead. Amherst was successful on 18-of-19 clear attempts, while the Herons went 12-for-17.

William Smith will be back in action on Thursday, March 20, when it takes on Babson at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla., at 9 a.m.
