Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Nazareth College women's lacrosse team scored a free position goal in the final second of regulation to edge William Smith 9-8 in a non-league game played this afternoon on Boswell Field. The Herons fall to 0-3 this season, while the Golden Flyers are now 1-0.

A goal by junior Katie Sipple off a feed from classmate Rachel Hughes put the Herons on top 8-7 with 16:27 left in the game. The Golden Flyers tied things up at 8-8 on an unassisted tally by Amy McIntosh. William Smith earned three free position attempts and hit the post twice in the final six minutes, but were unable to come up with the go-ahead goal. Sophomore Geneva Calder banged a free position shot off the post with six minutes on the clock. Hughes had another free position shot sail wide with a minute remaining. With 36 seconds left in the game, sophomore Kate Byrne drilled another shot off the post. Nazareth would collect the ball and the Golden Flyers cleared it down the field and were awarded a free position with two seconds remaining. Brooke Sullivan logged the game-winning goal on that free position attempt in the final second.

Calder led the William Smith with three goals. Sipple added two goals, and Hughes chipped in a goal and an assist as well as two caused turnovers. Byrne picked up a team-high four ground balls. First-year Allie Flaherty added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. First-year Sarah Honan played all 60 minutes in goal and made seven saves.

Sullivan led Nazareth with three goals, including the game winner. Kelsey McNaboe added two goals and won a game-high seven draws. Carly Gates scored a goal, picked up a game-high five ground balls and added three caused turnovers. Tara Prosak played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with six saves for the Golden Flyers.

The Herons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes on goals by Hughes and Calder. Sullivan broke through for Nazareth 3:29 in. Byrne and Calder staked a 4-1 lead for the Herons, but Sullivan struck again followed by a goal by Kelsey McNaboe to get Nazareth within one. With 10:36 left in the first, Sipple scored on a free position, but the Golden Flyers strung together three goals in the final 8:31 to take a 6-5 led into the break.

McNaboe notched a free position goal 4:15 into the second half to give Nazareth a 7-5 advantage. Calder and first-year Alexandra Bird logged free position goals just under a minute apart, and a goal by Sipple gave the Herons an 8-7 advantage. It was Bird's first collegiate goal. The Golden Flyers scored two goals in the final 9:49 for the win.

Nazareth finished with a 20-19 advantage in shots, a 16-13 edge in ground balls and an 11-6 lead in draws. The Golden Flyers were successful on 14 of their 15 clear attempts. William Smith went 15-for-20 on clears.

The Herons will be back in action on Wednesday, March 12, when they host No. 13 Hamilton at 5 p.m.
