Statesmen tennis earns spot in Liberty League semifinals with a 5-4 win over St. Lawrence

The fourth seeded Hobart College tennis team edged fifth seeded St. Lawrence 5-4 in a Liberty League tournament quarterfinal match played today on the indoor courts at the University of Rochester. The Statesmen improve to 13-9 and earned a spot in the semifinals.
 
The Saints finished their season with a 9-9 record. Today's win was the second time the Statesmen have defeated St. Lawrence this year, earning a 6-3 victory back on April 13 in Canton, N.Y. Hobart will face top-ranked Skidmore in the tournament semifinals tomorrow, May 3 at 10 a.m. The Thoroughbreds topped Bard 5-0 in their quarterfinal match this morning.
 
The Saints took a 2-1 lead after doubles, earning wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Junior Michael Fields and first-year Matt DePrima logged an 8-5 victory at the top spot, stretching their win streak to five matches.
 
Hobart made it 2-2 with a 7-5, 6-2 win at the top singles spot by Fields. First-year Danny Kot registered a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles to give the Statesmen a 3-2 lead. The Saints took back the lead with victories at Nos. 2 and 3, making it 4-3. First-year Carson Smith won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 and first-year Jake Criss clinched the overall win for Hobart with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 5.
