Results

CLIFTON SPRINGS, N.Y.—
The William Smith College golf team placed second in its won invitational over the weekend with a pair of Herons placing in the top five. Played at the par 72 Clifton Springs Country Club, senior Kara Capstraw and sophomore Madeline Dietz led the home team.

During Saturday's first round, Capstraw battled the course and a persistent problem with her contact lenses and still came home in second place, carding an 86, one off the leader, Ithaca's Indiana Jones. Dietz shot a 92 and was tied for fourth place.

Sunday's round began in a light rain, but ended in sunny and breezy conditions. Wearing an 8-year-old pair of glasses, Capstraw negotiated CSCC in an 88 to finished third out of 37 golfers. Dietz lowered her Saturday score by two strokes, closing her second round with a birdie on 18, and placed fifth overall. First-year Natalie Powers was the final Heron into the clubhouse on Sunday and her final round 94 clinched second place for the team. She finished 15th with a two-day score of 194. Heron sophomore Whitney Reynolds was 25th with a 205.

St. Lawrence University took the team title by 34 strokes over William Smith. The Saints' Laura Gay earned individual medalist honors, rallying from two strokes down after Day 1 to post Sunday's low round, an 82. Hamilton College took third, four strokes behind the Herons, followed by St. John Fisher (802), and SUNY Delhi (871). The tournament field also included individual entries from Ithaca, Keuka, and Nazareth colleges. The Bombers' Jones finished second two shots behind Gay. The Golden Flyers' Jennifer Lachell placed fourth (92-84-176).

William Smith will be back in action on Sept. 27-28 when the Herons compete in the Martin/Wallace Invitational hosted by SUNY Cortland.
