ResultsCANTON, N.Y.—The William Smith College golf team finished fifth out of nine teams in the 36-hole St. Lawrence Invitational this weekend. It's the Herons' best finish in the tournament since also taking fifth in 2008.
William Smith was in fifth place following the first round with a team score of 359. Senior
Kara Capstraw was the team's Day 1 leader, carding an 86 on the par 72 Appleton Golf Course. The Herons improved their team score by five strokes in the second round. Sophomore
Madeline Dietz shaved eight strokes off her opening round score to close with a career-best 82, finishing 16th in the field of 48 golfers with a career-best 172. Capstraw also placed in the top 20, tying for 19th with a two-day score of 175. First-year
Natalie Powers completed her first collegiate tournament in 25th place (89-93-182) while
Whitney Reynolds rounded out the team score in 29th place (94-90-184).
Behind individual medalist Alyssa Poentis, NYU took the team title by 22 strokes over Ithaca and St. Lawrence, which tied for second. Cortland finished fourth followed by William Smith, Hamilton, St. Lawrence B, Union, and Elmira.
The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 13-14, when they compete in the NYU Invitational.
