The William Smith College squash team picked up wins over Denison, Bucknell and Rochester in its opening weekend of the 2015-16 season. The Herons topped the Big Red 8-1 and downed both the Bison and the Yellowjackets 9-0 on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Against Denison, first-year
Madison Bradley notched a 3-0 victory at No. 3 in her first collegiate match, winning 11-3, 11-3, 11-3. Junior
Brooke Hayes also collected a 3-0 victory at No. 4, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6.
Hattye Hytla,
Erin Casey, and
Stacy Avigail Maceda also notched 3-0 victories at Nos. 7-9 respectively. Sophomores
Michaelann Denton,
Peyton Capute, and
Anna Worcester won in five games at Nos. 2, 5, and 6. Anandita Gupta won the lone match for the Big Red at No. 1.
The Herons swept Bucknell to improve to 2-0 on the day. Sophomore
Cashel McCarthy notched her first win of the day, beating Anna Hartt, 11-8, 11-7, 12-10. Denton won her second match of the day, defeating Bucknell's Liesel Ferguson, 11-6, 11-4, 11-6. Bradley, Hayes, and Worcester won 3-0 at Nos. 3, 4, and 6, respectively. Cajpute and Hytla won their matches in four games, 3-1. Casey and Maceda won their matches against the Bison by forfeit.
In their final match of the day, the Herons won 3-0 at Nos. 1-9 against Rochester. McCarthy eanred an 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 win at the top spot and Denton picked up an 11-4, 11-3, 11-2 win at No. 2. Bradley downed her opposition 11-1, 11-3, 11-3 at No. 3 and Hayes posted an 11-3, 11-2, 11-2 triumph at No. 4. At No. 5, Capute notched an 11-4, 11-7, 11-5 victory and at the No. 6 spot, Worcester cruised to an 11-2, 11-1, 11-0 win. Hytla topped her opponent 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 at No. 7, Casey notched an 11-3, 11-2, 11-1 win at No. 8 and Maceda earned an 11-0, 11-5, 11-4 victory at No. 9.
William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 14, when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y. The Herons are scheduled to take on Minnesota, Colgate, and Boston University.
