Herons host Saints for Liberty League championship

The top-seeded William Smith College soccer team will host No. 3 seed St. Lawrence in the Liberty League tournament championship game on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m., on Cozzens Field. The Herons will be vying for their ninth straight league tournament title.
 
William Smith topped No. 4 seed Vassar 5-0 in its semifinal match on Wednesday to secure a spot in the championship. The Saints defeated No. 2 seeded RIT 3-1 in Rochester, N.Y., in their semifinal.
 
The Herons, who are ranked No. 3 in the nation, bring a 15-1-1 overall record into the championship match and have logged 14 straight victories all by shutout. Senior Krista Longo and junior Brie Ruane lead the team with 23 points each on 10 goals and three assists. Junior Kara Shue has earned a team-high eight assists. First-year goalie Kaileen Murray has played the majority of minutes and leads the nation in goals against average (0.08) and save percentage (.960).
 
William Smith ranks second in the nation in shutout percentage (.882) and fifth in goals against average (0.17). The Herons are also eighth in Division III in save percentage (.914) and win percentage (.912).
 
St. Lawrence brings a 13-3-2 overall record to Geneva. Kaleigh White leads the Saints with 29 points on 14 goals and an assist. Katie Stames has notched seven goals and a team-high 10 assists for 24 points. Kelsey West has played the majority of minutes in goal and is sporting a 0.80 goals against average, a .788 save percentage and a 13-3-2 record in goal.
 
When the teams met during the regular season, the Herons earned a 5-0 victory in Canton, N.Y. The championship will be a rematch of the 2014 Liberty League tournament championship. Last year, William Smith earned a 2-0 win over the Saints in Geneva.
