Hobart defeats Grinnell, Luther

ORLANDO, FLA. – The Hobart College tennis team collected a pair of 5-4 victories today in Orlando, Florida. In their first match of the day, the Statesmen beat Grinnelll. This evening, Hobart came from behind to beat Luther. With the two wins, the Statesmen improve to 6-1 this season.  

In its first match of the day, Hobart outlasted the Pioneers. The Statesmen took a 4-2 lead at the conclusion of singles play. Sophomore Michael Rusk came from one set down to win his match, 3-6, 6-3, 12-10, in No. 1 singles. Senior Michael Fields also needed three sets to collect a victory at No. 2. He won his match, 6-0, 6-7, 10-4. First-year Harry Nichols won at No. 4, 7-5, 6-1, while fellow first year Miles Singer won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2.

Entering doubles play, Hobart needed just one win to clinch the match. Fields and Sophomore Matt DePrima won at No. 1 doubles 8-2 to secure the victory for the Statesmen.

Hobart returned to the courts this evening to battle with the Norse. Luther took an early lead winning two of the three doubles matches. Fields and DePrima won 8-6 in the No. 1 spot to claim their second win of the day.

In singles play, Rusk notched his second win of the day in the top singles spot. He defeated his opponent in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 10-5. At. No. 2, Fields outlasted his opponent, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Singer prevailed at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 7-5. DePrima clinched the match for the Statesmen in the No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Hobart will complete its spring break trip on Thursday, March 19, when it faces Colby-Sawyer. The match with the Chargers is scheduled to begin at noon.
