Lucas, Dougherty earn Liberty League honors

First-year guards Jamal Lucas and Colin Dougherty represented the Hobart College basketball team when the Liberty League postseason awards were announced this morning. Both players earned a place on the conference's All-Rookie Team, while Lucas also received All-Liberty League honorable mention.

The first first-year to lead Hobart in scoring in 35 years, Lucas enjoyed an impressive debut season. A starter in 24 of 25 games, he averaged 16.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 2.0 steals, and 0.7 blocked shots per game while shooting .401 from the floor, .316 from 3-point range, and .784 at the free throw line. Lucas' 417 points are three shy of the Hobart record for a first-year (Stefan Thompson '13 420 in 2009-10). He also earned 171 free throws this season, making 134 (6th on Hobart's single season list). Lucas is 46th in the nation in free throws made and 80th in steals per game.

Lucas led the Statesmen in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocks and ranked among the league leaders in steals (3rd), scoring (4th), rebounding (6th), and blocked shots (9th). Lucas was the only player to rank in the top six in the league in scoring and rebounding.

Lucas scored a season-high 25 points at Bard, dished out a season-high seven assists in a home win over Vassar, blocked a season-high three shots at Vassar, and notched a season-high six steals at Fisher College. He recorded a pair of double-doubles this season, producing 23 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in a home win over UAA runner-up Rochester and tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds against Liberty League Champion Skidmore.

Lucas was named the Liberty League Performer of the Week twice and earned two Liberty League Rookie of the Week awards this season. He also brought home two ECAC Upstate Rookie of the Week awards.

A starter in all 25 games this season, Dougherty averaged 12.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting .409 from the floor, .343 from behind the arc, and .760 at the line. He ranked in the top 20 in the conference in steals (10th), scoring (16th), and assists (19th).

Dougherty scored a career-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 6-of-10 at the line and dished out a season-high four assists in a home overtime win against Clarkson. He was a perfect 10-for-10 at the line in Hobart's road win over NCAA tournament bound Scranton. Dougherty logged a season-high four steals at league champion Skidmore.

Dougherty was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week after averaging 19.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg in wins over RIT and Union to close out the regular season. He hit the game-winning basket with 1.6 seconds remaining in overtime to beat the Dutchmen.

After graduating at least one 1,000-point scorer in each of the past five seasons, Hobart began the 2015-16 season without any seniors and no player with more than six career starts. The Statesmen were picked to finish fifth in the Liberty League preseason poll. Hobart consistently started three first-years and as many as four rookies throughout the season and finished with a 12-13 overall record. The Statesmen exceeded the coaches' prediction, tying for fourth in the Liberty League standings with an 8-8 record.
