SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- For the 11th consecutive season, the Liberty League Men's Rowing Championship plaque will make the journey back to Geneva, N.Y. with the Hobart rowing team. The Statesmen collected three gold medals and a silver medal on its way to capturing the conference championship.
Â
For the first time since the 2004, the men's championship used a points system based on the finish of the varsity eight and second varsity eight boats to determine the champion. The Liberty League has seven schools that compete in rowing, but only schools with an entry in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight were eligible to earn points and win the championship. The second varsity eight's victory was worth eight points, and the varsity eight's win was worth 20, giving Hobart a team total of 28 points. RIT who finished second in both races had 23 points.
Â
In the afternoon's first race, Men's Collegiate 2V8, the Statesmen's second varsity eight of
Julia Dexter,
Milos Milosavljevic,
Jordan Rooth,
John Hibbard,
Steven Bunce,
D. Griffin Marsh,
Dylan Brodie,
Dilan Bower, and
Patrick Ware cruised to a gold medal, crossing the finish line with open water at 6:36.37. The Tigers finished 16 seconds back. St. Lawrence finished third another 30 seconds back of RIT, and Union rounded out the field.
Â
Entering today's championship, the varsity eight race had been contested 11 times with the Hobart varsity eight claiming gold medals all 11 times. This afternoon,
Sam Zuckerman,
Sam Ash,
Austin Letorney,
Brett Lawhon,
Davis Muller,
Julien Green,
Matthew Sylvan,
Axel Witt, and
August Wherry kept the streak alive capturing a 12th gold medal. The Statesmen powered down the 2000-meter Fish Creek course in a time of 6:29.10, 19 seconds ahead of the Tigers. Skidmore crossed the line third while the Saints placed fourth.
Â
Although they did not factor into the team's point total, Hobart's third and fourth varsity eights captured medals in the men's third varsity eight event. The Statesmen third varsity eight stopped the clock first with a time of 6:55.30, 19 seconds ahead of the fourth varsity. St. Lawrence rounded out the field with a third place finish.
Â
Hobart will be back on the water on May 1, when they travel to Princeton, N.J. The Statesmen will race against Navy, Columbia, and George Washington.
