Dubrovsky leads Statesmen at ITA Regionals

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.- The Hobart College tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule this past weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Skidmore College. Sophomore Alan Dubrovsky led the way for the Statesmen, advancing to the semifinals in both the singles and doubles draws.

"I'm proud of the way the team played and conducted themselves on the court this weekend," Head Coach Tim Riske said. "Having semi-finalists in singles and doubles puts Hobart among the region's top teams."

Dubrovsky entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed but slipped past Vassar's Adam Kreuger in a super tiebreaker, 6-0, 5-7, 10-6. Dubrovsky won his next three matches in straight sets to reach today's semifinals. His toughest match of the three was his third round match up with Rensselaer's Andre Imrie. Dubrovsky won 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). He fell 6-3, 6-3 to Skidmore's JT Wynne, who went on to win the singles title. It's the first time a Statesmen has advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Regional Championship since Peter Piné played in the 2004 championship match. Dubrovsky is now a team best 8-1 in singles play this year.

In the doubles bracket, Dubrovsky teamed with junior Jonah Salita. They won their first round match 8-5 over Stevens Institute of Technology's Kyle Henry and Matt Kanevsky. In the second round, they bested The College of New Jersey's Tim Gavornik and Chris D'Agostino, 8-6, to set up a quarterfinal match against Rochester's Peter Huang and Masaru Fujimaki. The Statesmen breezed to an 8-2 win and an appearance in the semifinals. The Engineers top pair stopped Hobart's run with a hard-fought 8-6 victory. It's the first time a Hobart doubles team reached the ITA Regional Semifinals since 2012. Following the weekend, Dubrovsky and Salita are 6-1 overall as a doubles team.

The Statesmen opened the tournament winning four of their five first round singles matches. Senior Harry Nichols defeated Rensselaer's Zack Ebenfield, 6-1, 6-3, while junior Jonathan Atwater, who was the tournament's No. 7 seed, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over St. Lawrence's Leo Romanetz.  Salita advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Union's Max Egna. Sophomore Joe Mallon was edged 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 in his first round match. In Saturday's second round, Hobart posted a 2-2 record. Salita and Dubrovsky advanced to the third round with 6-2, 6-4 victories. Nichols was topped by the tournament's top seed, Umberto Setter, 6-0, 6-2. Salita was edged in the third round by Wynne, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. The Statesmen finished the weekend with an 8-5 record in singles play.

Hobart was 4-3 overall in the doubles draw. Nichols and Atwater won their first round match 8-2 before falling in the second round to the Engineer's top team.  Junior Patrick Gray and sophomore Joe Mallon also represented the Statesmen in the singles draw.

"We get better every match, tournament, and practice," Riskie said. "The results of this tournament are encouraging and we are looking forward to the dual match season in 2018."

Hobart has concluded the 2017 portion of its schedule. The Statesmen will return to action when it hosts Oneonta in its first dual match of the season on Feb. 24.
