ORLANDO, Fla.-The Hobart College tennis team defeated the University of Scranton 9-0 in the first match of its spring break trip this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 1-0 on the season after besting the Royals at the USTA National Campus.
Hobart took control of the match early winning all three doubles matches. Senior Danny Kot and first-year Alan Dubrovsky gave the Statesmen a 1-0 lead in the match with an 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. In the No. 3 spot, sophomore Jonathan Atwater and first-year Colin Molloy cruised to an 8-1 win. Senior Michael Rusk and sophomore Jonah Salita also won 8-1 in the No. 1 spot.Â
With a 3-0 lead, all six Statesmen players won their singles matches in straight sets. Dubrovsky improved to 5-2 in his rookie season with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 2. Junior Harry Nichols clinched the overall victory for Hobart, defeating Matt Prendergast 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. In the top spot, Atwater topped Keller McGurrin 6-1, 6-3. Atwater is a team-best 6-2 overall on the season. Sophomore Patrick Gray cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 singles. First-year Joe Mallon lost two games at No. 5, besting Charles Swope 6-2, 6-0. Kot closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4.
The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of matches at the USTA National Campus. Hobart will face the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 8 a.m. and Colby-Sawyer at 7 p.m.
