#20 Herons cap homestand this week

The 20th-ranked William Smith College field hockey team will close out its eight-game homestand this week with a pair of games. The Herons will host Cortland tomorrow night at 7 p.m. before returning to Liberty League play on Saturday against Rensselaer at 2 p.m.
 
William Smith brings a 6-2 record into the week. On Saturday, the Herons were edged by then No. 16 Rochester 4-3 in overtime in the Liberty League opener for both teams. William Smith's offense has been firing on all cylinders through the first eight games of the season. The Herons are second in the nation in assists per game (3.38) and points per game (12.13) and fourth in goals per game (4.83). William Smith is led by senior Hannah Wood's 26 points (11g, 4a). Junior Fallon Adair is second on the team with 19 points.  She leads the Herons with nine assists and averages a nation's best 1.13 assists per game.
 
Senior Emily King and first-year Alexandra DeVito have split time in goal for the Herons this year, both are 3-1 on the year. DeVito has a 1.41 goals against average and a .615 save percentage. King owns a 2.00 goals against average and a .625 save percentage.
 
The Red Dragons bring a 5-2 record into tomorrow's game and are coming off of a 7-2 win over Morrisville on Friday. Cortland has two common opponents with William Smith so far this season, Geneso and Rochester. The Red Dragons lost to the Knights 5-0 and defeated the Yellowjackets 1-0 in overtime last Tuesday. Cortland is led by Anna Branch's 12 points (5g, 2a). Branch was the hero for the Red Dragons scoring the overtime winner against Rochester. Jessica Welsh leads the team with five assists. Kailynne Reinoehl has played all but 23 minutes in goal for Cortland, posting a 1.48 goals against average and a .811 save percentage.  Last year she made 12 saves in the Red Dragon's 2-1 win over William Smith.
 
The Engineers begin the week with a 1-7 overall record and a 0-1 record in conference play. Rensselaer dropped its conference opener to Vassar 5-1 on Saturday. Taylor Clink leads the Engineers with five goals and 12 points. Mikaela DiBello has a team best three assists. Rensselaer is third in the nation with 12 defensive saves this year. Lauren Hiltz, Christina Hanos, and Emma Lewis all have three. Rachel Kaufman has seen a majority of the action in the Engineers' cage. She owns a .741 save percentage and a 3.52 goals against average.
