Herons host breast cancer awareness events Saturday

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College Athletics Department will host breast cancer awareness month events in conjunction with its three home events on Oct. 27. The Heron soccer and field hockey teams will play their final regular season matches while the swimming and diving team will open its season on Saturday.

William Smith will continue its support of local breast cancer charity, Embrace Your Sisters, accepting donations at all three events. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to all three events. Hobart and William Smith students attending the contests will be given a pink Herons' Nest t-shirt (while supplies last).

The 11th-ranked William Smith soccer team will host St. Lawrence University at 2 p.m. Due to the weather forecast, the match has been moved to Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium. The Herons are 11-3-0 overall, 7-1-0 in league play, and have clinched at least a share of their 12th consecutive Liberty League regular season championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the league championship tournament. The Saints are 9-1-4 overall, 4-1-3 in conference, and have clinched a spot in the six-team playoff. SLU is playing for seeding and could finish as high as second.

The Heron field hockey team will take on second-ranked Messiah College on McCooey Field at noon. The Falcons are undefeated, riding a 16-match winning streak to Geneva. William Smith is 5-10 going into the non-conference showdown.

The swimming and diving team will host Utica College in Bristol Pool at 1 p.m. The Herons will be looking for their eighth straight win over the Pioneers.

Embrace Your Sisters is a not-for-profit charity serving Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties. It provides people diagnosed with breast cancer with short-term emergency financial assistance. EYS helps ease the difficulty of mounting medical expenses as well as helping make ends meet when people are unable to work due to illness or treatment.
