Herons to host Liberty League semifinals, championship

The William Smith College lacrosse team shared the Liberty League's regular season title and earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament for the third year in a row. The Herons will face No. 4 seed RPI on Saturday, May 5, in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. The second semifinal will feature No. 2 Ithaca and No. 6 RIT at 2:30 p.m.
 
The advancing teams will meet in the championship on Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m., with the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on the line. All three games will be played on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.
 
The Herons are ranked No. 16 in the nation and are two-time defending Liberty League champions. William Smith is riding a five-game win streak and brings a 12-4 overall record into tournament play. Senior Melissa Moore leads the team 37 goals, 18 assists, 55 points, 36 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers. First-year Mekayla Montgomery has a team-high 47 draws. First-year Jules Kennedy has played the majority of minutes in goal. She leads the league and ranks eighth in the nation with a 6.20 goals against average. Kennedy is first in the conference and 20th in Division III with a .535 save percentage. She's 9-2 in goal this year.
 
RPI is 9-5-1 this season. The Engineers defeated No. 4 seed Clarkson in their quarterfinal on Tuesday 10-7 to earn a spot in the semifinals. Maddy Aslansan leads the team with 38 goals and 47 points. Nora Molino has a team-high 44 draws. Laurel Dean leads the team with 40 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers and Allie Claroni has dished out a team-high 12 assists. Aleena Milinski has played the majority of minutes in goal. She has a 9.20 goals against average, a .536 save percentage and a 9-5 record.
 
The Herons and Engineers met back on March 23 on Boswell Field. William Smith earned a 7-2 victory.
 
Ithaca, which is ranked No. 19 in the latest IWLCA Division III poll, is 13-4 this season. The Bombers are riding a five-game win streak. Allie Panara leads the team with 47 assists and 82 points. Elizabeth Rice has a team-high 62 goals. Elizabeth Sauer leads the way with 52 ground balls and Molly Long has registered a team-high 43 caused turnovers. Reid Simoncini has won a team-high 75 draws. Kimberly Presuto has played in all 17 games in goal. She is sporting an 8.41 goals against average, a .518 save percentage and a 13-4 record.
 
RIT is 8-10 this year and won its first ever Liberty League Tournament game, upsetting No. 3 seed Skidmore 15-14 on Tuesday. Brooks Melnyk scored the game-winning goal with 2:04 left in regulation. Emily Livecchi leads the team with 43 assists and 98 points. Alanna Fallone has a team-high 62 goals. Maegan Schmauder leads the way with 29 caused turnovers. Maddie Dillabaugh has a team-high 45 ground balls and 46 draws. Rebekah Snitkoff has played the most minutes in goal for RIT. She has a 14.71 goals against average, a .419 save percentage and a 6-9 record.
 
Ithaca and RIT just met in the regular season finale for both teams on April 28. The Bombers earned a 14-10 victory in Rochester.
