Dubrovsky, Anderson capture Northeast doubles crown

GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart College sophomore Walker Anderson and junior Alan Dubrovsky teamed up to win the doubles title at the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's Northeast Regional Championship. With the victory, Anderson and Dubrovsky advance to the 2018 ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga.

As the winners of the ITA Northeast Regional, Anderson and Dubrovsky were named All-Americans.

"Walker and Alan played with a lot of energy all weekend," Head Coach Tim Riskie said. "We worked on fundamentals and they got good at them so they could understand what was happening on the court a little better and just play out there. They were able to bounce back after some bad misses and they did not let those misses phase them. They were determined and professional all weekend. They played with a lot of poise and maturity. They rose to the occasion and earned it."

Tonight's championship match was played under the lights at the HWS Tennis Center on the Morrow Championship Court. Anderson and Dubrovsky, who entered the tournament as the fifth seed, were matched against Stevens Institute of Technology's Brian Szayana and Marc Feliu Gomez, who were the No. 4 seed. The match was tightly contested and took all three sets to decide. Anderson and Dubrovsky won the first set, 6-2. Szayana and Feliu Gomez battled back to claim the second set 6-4.  After falling behind 2-1 in the third set, Anderson and Dubrovsky rattled off wins in five straight games to take the set, 6-2, and claim the regional title.

The first four rounds of the doubles draw were played in eight-game pro sets. Anderson and Durbrovsky opened the tournament with an 8-1 win over Rochester Institute of Technology's Brennan Bull and Nick Lim. Due to a late start to singles matches on Friday thanks to overnight rain, only one round of singles was completed.

On Saturday afternoon, in the round of 16, Anderson and Dubrovsky picked up an 8-4 victory over The College of New Jersey's Matt Puig and Justin Wain. They secured a spot in this morning's semifinal with an 8-5 win over Rensselaer's Dylan Payne and Zach Ebenfield.

In the semifinals, Anderson and Dubrovsky were matched with the top seeded team of Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez and Andrew Imrie.  After a back and forth battle, Hobart was able to earn a break point with the match tied 6-6. Anderson and Dubrovsky won the next game to claim the match, 8-6, and earn a spot in the championship.

The Statesmen won all three of their first round doubles matches but the other two teams were knocked out in the second round. First-year Jack Ledford and junior Colin Molloy defeated Ithaca's Minos Stavrakas and Michael Gardiner, 9-7.  First-year Thomas Shung and senior Jonathan Atwater bested Stevens' Mark Kanevsky and Keegan Morris.

Anderson and Dubrovsky will take to the Rome Tennis Center Courts for the ITA Cup Oct. 11-14.
