Dubrovsky claims ITA Northeast Region singles title

GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart College junior Alan Dubrovsky claimed the singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's Northeast Regional Championship when he defeated Rensselaer's Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez at the HWS Tennis Center this afternoon. With the victory, Dubrovsky advances to the 2018 ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga.

As the winner of the ITA Northeast Regional, Dubrovsky becomes Hobart's first All-American since Hobart Hall of Famer Adam Schapiro '96.  Dubrovsky is also the first Statesman to win the ITA Regional Championship since Shapiro won the Rolex Intercollegiate Tennis Championship in September of 1995.

"This is a long time coming for Alan," Head Coach Tim Riskie said after the championship match. "He is a very self motivated and determined individual. It all came together for him this weekend. He got hot and had a great tournament. He really rose to the occasion on one of the bigger stages that he'll see as a college athlete. "

The championship match was a three-set thriller between Dubovsky and Castillo-Sanchez. Dubrovsky took the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). Castillo-Sanchez rolled to a 6-2 win in the second set to force a third and deciding set. Dubrovsky won the first three games before Castillo-Sanchez came roaring back, winning the next four games. Dubrovsky closed out the championship winning three straight games in front of a boisterous crowd at the HWS Tennis Center.

Dubrovsky came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed and rattled off six straight wins to improve to 10-1 on the season. The victory over Castillo-Sanchez was the 50th singles win of his Statesmen career.

Dubrovsky began play on Friday inside Bristol Field House with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Skidmore's Jack McClaren. In the second round, he defeated Union's Max Egna 6-1, 6-0. The round of 16 saw Dubrovsky move outside to the HWS Tennis Center. He wasted little time dispatching Vassar's David Gandham 6-0, 6-0. Dubrovsky lost his first set of the tournament in Saturday's quarterfinal match against RPI's Clay Thompson. In that match, Dubrovsky advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 win.

This morning, Dubrovsky was matched up against top-seed and defending champion JT Wynne of Skidmore, in a rematch of last year's semifinal. This year Dubrovsky would emerge victorious, defeating Wynne, 6-4, 7-5.

Elsewhere in the singles draw, Sophomore Walker Anderson and first-year Jack Ledford won their first round matches but were eliminated in the second round. Anderson defeated Allen Sokolov of Vassar 6-4, 6-3 and Ledford bested Leo Romanetz of St. Lawrence 6-1, 6-2.

Dubrovsky will take to the Rome Tennis Center Courts for the ITA Cup Oct. 11-14.
