Herons hold at #2 in coaches poll

For the second straight week, the William Smith College soccer team was ranked No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. In addition, the Herons moved up one spot to No. 3 in the D3soccer.com poll.
 
William Smith (13-1-1, 8-0-0) extended its winning streak to nine games with a pair of 6-0 victories over the weekend. On Saturday, the Herons locked up their 13th consecutive Liberty League regular season title with a win over Bard in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. Six different players scored goals in the victory. William Smith followed that with a win over Mount Saint Mary in Newburgh, N.Y. First-year Katrine Berg led the way with five points (2g, 1a). The Heron defense held the Raptors and Knights to two combined shots.
 
Entering the week, William Smith ranks among the nation's best in goals against average (3rd, 0.26), winning percentage (10th, .900) and shutout percentage (11th, .733). The Herons have recorded a Liberty League best 11 shutouts in 15 games this season, allowing a league-low four goals. William Smith's defense has limited its opponents to just 4.8 shots per game.
 
Offensively, William Smith has relied on its depth this season with 18 players having at least one goal. Junior Sheila McQuillen and first-year Seneca Blakely-Armitage lead the charge with four goals each. McQuillen and Berg share the team lead with 11 points each. Berg has a team-leading five assists. Sophomore Amanda Kesler has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 13-1-1 with a 0.28 goals against average and a .862 save percentage. Kesler ranks third in the nation in GAA and her nine shutouts are ninth.
 
William Smith wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 2, when it travels to take on St. Lawrence. The game in Canton, N.Y., is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The Saints are 10-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence is currently tied for third in the Liberty League standings. Julia Mulhern leads the team with seven goals, four assists and 18 points. Samantha Allen has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 9-2-0 with a 0.98 GAA and a .853 save percentage.
 
Saturday's match will be the 47th meeting between William Smith and St. Lawrence. The Herons lead the all-time series 36-7-3, including a 14-5-2 mark in Canton.
