Herons open season with three wins

BUFFALO, N.Y. —The William Smith College squash team opened the 2019-20 season with wins over Rochester, Washington (Mo.) University, and Denison. This is the fourth straight year the Herons have won the Buffalo Round Robin Tournament. The Herons defeated the Yellowjackets 9-0, the Bears 8-1, and the Big Red 8-1.
 
In the win over Rochester, senior Gabby Fraser started off with an 11-0, 11-0, 11-1 victory in the No. 1 spot while classmate Djeneba Ballo also won 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 at No. 2. First-years Talia Welker, Erin Griffis, and Maia Dreishpoon earned their first collegiate wins in the 3, 5, and 6 spots respectively. Sophomore Molly Wachter collected a win in the No. 4 spot. Sophomore Gretchen Vietor, first-year Ashley Edwards, and sophomore Saige Arseneault swept their opponents 3-0 in the last three spots respectively.
 
In the second match against Washington (Mo.) University, Welker won in the No. 2 spot, and Wachter collected a win 11-3, 11-10, 11-2. Griffis notched a win at No. 4, and Dreishpoon swept Virginia Grace Mills 11-6, 11-7, 11-2. Vietor notched a win at No. 6, and Edwards won 11-3 in all three matches at No. 7. Arseneault topped Sarah Acselrod 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 at No. 8.
 
In the last match of the day against Denison, Fraser improved to 2-0 in the No. 1 spot. Welker collected her second win at No. 3, and Wachter swept Paige Duffy 11-2, 11-2, 12-10 at No. 4. Griffis and Dreishpoon recorded wins at No. 5 and 6 respectively. Vietor notched a win at No. 7, and Edwards swept Zoe Pearce in the No. 8 spot. Arseneault dropped her first match 8-11, but came back to win 11-7, 11-2, 11-9 at No. 9.
 
William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 16, when they host St. Lawrence at the Smith Squash Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
