MIDDLETOWN, Conn.—The No. 26 William Smith College squash team won two matches, and lost one at the Wesleyan Round Robin this weekend. The Herons defeated No. 30 Vassar 8-1, No. 39 Bard 8-1, and fell to No. 21 Wesleyan 7-2.
In the opening match against the Brewers, senior
Gabby Fraser defeated Claire Coss 11-6, 11-5, 11-3 in the No. 1 spot. Junior
Jo Pacheco topped Claire Weiss 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 in the No. 2 spot of the ladder. Sophomore
Molly Wachter topped Nicole Pihlstrom 11-7, 11-2, 11-2 in the No. 4 spot. First-year
Erin Griffis won in three sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 at No. 5. Classmate
Maia Dreishpoon downed Samantha Henderson 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 at No. 6. Sophomore
Gretchen Vietor won 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 at No. 7 on the ladder. First-year
Aye Bah won all three sets 11-3 at No. 8, and sophomore
Saige Arseneault defeated Caitlin Lewis 11-4, 11-2, 11-4 in the No. 9 spot.
The Herons faced the Raptors in their second match of the day. Pacheco earned her second win of the day, defeating Pam Jaramillo 11-5, 11-9, 10-4 in the No. 1 spot. Wachter recorded her fifth win of the season when she topped Nadia Russell 11-2, 11-7, 11-3 at No. 3. Griffis won in three sets, defeating Jackie Lerman 11-1, 11-1, 11-0 at No. 4. Dreishpoon only gave up one point, winning 11-1, 11-0, 11-0 in the No. 5. Vietor defeated Marlaina Yost 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 for her fifth win of the season at No. 6. Senior
Karina Lazaro won at No. 7 over Siren Chen 11-4, 11-0, 11-2. Arseneault notched a win at No. 8, defeating Cameron Orr 11-3, 11-2, 11-0. Arseneault is 5-0 this season First-year
Ashley Edwards downed Ophelia Wang 11-4, 11-1, 11-1 for her fourth win of the season.
In the Herons last match of the day, they collected wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Fraser dropped the first set, but came back to defeat Ananya Vir 9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 at No. 1 for her fifth win of the season. Pacheco battled in the fourth set, to earn a win over Valeria Osorio 11-8, 3-11, 12-10, 16-14 at No. 2. Pacheco won all three of her matches today. Dreishpoon battled hard through five sets, but fell 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-1 in the No. 6 spot.
William Smith has concluded the 2019 portion of its schedule. The Herons will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 19, when they travel to Fordham University. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
