Hobart completes season at IRAs

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — The Hobart College rowing team concluded its season at the 2019 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships on Lake Natoma today. The Statesmen's first, second, and third varsity eights were in action today.
 
Hobart's third varsity eight was on the water first for the Statesmen in the third level final at 12:22 p.m. (9:22 a.m. PT). Sophomore Stephen Ponticiello, junior Miles Cornman, first-year Alex Sickmuller, first-year Michael Canino, junior Steven Ives, first-year Anthony Carella, sophomore David Pratt, junior Parker Cornman, and first-year Nate Jacon faced No. 13 Cornell, No. 16 Oregon, No. 20 Drexel, No. 21 UCSD, No. 14 George Washington, and No. 17 Stanford. The Big Red won the heat, posting a time of 6:04.426. The Beavers finished two seconds later, placing second. The Colonials crossed the line two seconds after the Beavers, taking third. The Statesmen recorded a time of 6:13.574, placing sixth (18th overall).

Hobart's third varsity eight completed a successful season by securing a gold medal at NIRCs. The Statesmen ended the year ranked No. 17 in the US Rowing Coaches Poll.

Hobart's second varsity eight took to the water next, racing in the third level final at 12:38 p.m. (9:38 a.m. PT). Sophomore Bart Voto, sophomore Wyatt Hathaway, first-year Blake Evans, sophomore David Ranney, junior Randall Hooper, first-year Zachary Berzon, junior Lukian Maratovic, first-year Cameron Kumagai, and first-year Aidan Spencer competed against No. 16 Wisconsin, No. 15 Columbia, No. 14 Pennsylvania, No. 18 Oregon, and No. 20 Stanford. The Badgers crossed the line first with a time of 5:56.545. The Lions followed 1.433 seconds after. Columbia edged the Beavers by 0.214 seconds. The Statesmen finished fifth (17th overall), recording a time of 6:03.052.
 
The Statesmen's 2V8 secured a bid to the IRAs by defeating Michigan, nabbing another NIRC gold medal for the Statesmen. Hobart also collected a gold medal at the Liberty League Championships, defeating Ithaca by three seconds. The 2V8 earned a win over Stanford at the Stanford Invitational in April. The Statesmen ended the year ranked No. 19 in the US Rowing Coaches Poll.
 
Hobart's varsity eight competed in the fourth level final at 1:32 p.m. (10:32 a.m. PT). Junior Greg Narzikul, junior Carter Weitekamp, first-year Moritz Marchart, sophomore Jackson Baney, junior Patrick Overton, junior Martin Roeck, junior Alberto Wray, junior Andrew Krimmel, and junior Henry Vachon took on No. 19 Florida Institute of Technology, the No. 21 Dragons, No. 18 Oregon, No. 25 UCSD, and Santa Clara. The Tigers were the first boat to finish, notching a time of 5:51.588. The Beavers earned second, edging the Dragons by 1.702 seconds. The Statesmen finished fifth (23rd overall), 0.177 seconds behind the Broncos.
 
Hobart's varsity eight completed a successful season on the water collecting gold medals at the NIRCs, and the Liberty League Championships. The varsity eight was also named the 2018-19 Liberty League Crew of the Year. The Statesmen wrapped up the season ranked No. 22 in the US Rowing Coaches Poll.
