Overall, the Statesmen put together a strong opening weekend at the SLU Fall Classic, posting a 22-9 record in singles play, and 14-5 record in doubles play.
Dubrovsky and Ayman went head-to-head in the championship match. Dubrovsky defeated Ayman 6-3, 6-3. On Saturday, Dubrovsky began the tournament with an 8-6 win over Rochester's Runjia Fang. In the quarterfinals, he bested Hamilton's Rob Dotterer 8-6. Dubrovsky topped first-year
Harry Lyu 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinal. Junior
Walker Anderson was the fourth Statesmen to compete in A flight singles. Anderson fell 8-7 (7-4) in the quarterfinals to the host's Nico Haet.
Sophomores
Jeremy Atwater and
Thomas Shung competed in B flight singles. Atwater defeated the Continental's Eric Stein 8-5 in the first round. Atwater went on to top the Yellowjackets' Mark Zolotukhin 8-3. Shung started off the tournament with a victory over Hamilton's Adam Dietz 8-3.
Sophomore
Jack Ledford advanced to the championship match in C flight singles. Ledford had his first win over RIT's Nick Lim 8-3. In the quarterfinals, Ledford defeated Rochester's Michael Rudin 8-1. Senior
Colin Molloy also competed in C flight singles. Molloy defeated Union's Nick Weitzman 8-4. Molloy went on to top the Tigers' David Trimmer 8-2.
Mallon won the D flight singles championship match after defeating the Yellowjackets' Matt Resnikoff 6-4, 7-5. On Saturday, Mallon topped the Dutchmen's Ryan Dagan 8-4. In the semifinals, Mallon defeated Ithaca's Artem Khaybullin 6-1, 6-0.
Dubrovsky and Ayman defeated Hamilton's Matt Bartok and Rob Dotterer 8-7 (7-4) to capture A flight doubles. The pair started off the tournament with a win over Rochester's Runjia Fang and Tanmay Thakkar 8-7 (0-5). In the quarterfinals, Dubrovsky and Ayman topped Union's Ioannis Binopoulos and Aidan O'Brien 8-5. Dubrovsky and Ayman advanced to the championship match by defeating the Continental's Sam Farber and Eric Stein 8-6. In B Flight doubles, Molloy and Shung advanced to the championship match. In the first round, Molloy and Shung topped Hamilton's Henry Schwob and Lucas Suhl 8-6. Molloy and Shung defeated St. Lawrence's Shepard Shutkin and Guy Holbrook 8-1 in the quarterfinals. Jett Wright advanced to the quarterfinals. Bakiri and Wright also won the B flight doubles exhibition championship match after defeating St. Lawrence's Quinn Bermingham and Shepard Shutkin 8-6.
The Statesmen will be back in action September 21, when they travel to Amherst, Mass., to take on Amherst and Colby-Sawyer. The matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
