Herons down Camels 5-4

AMHERST, Mass.—The No. 27 William Smith College squash team defeated No. 24 Connecticut College 5-4 this evening in its first match of the 2020 Pioneer Invitational. The Herons improve to 8-2 overall, and the Camels fall to 7-8.
 
First-year Marcela Marquez Martinez won at No. 1 in three games 11-5, 11-4, 11-2. Senior Gabby Fraser defeated Margaret Davey in three games at No. 2, winning her fourth consecutive match. Fraser is 7-1 overall this season. Junior Jo Pacheco dropped the first two games, but battled back at No. 3 to win her fifth consecutive match. At No. 5, sophomore Molly Wachter won 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7. After a five game battle, senior Karina Lazaro won at No. 9 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-9.
 
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 25 when they face No. 16 Amherst at 10 a.m. and Haverford at 3 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
