Hobart tennis #34 for spring opener

The Hobart College tennis team is ranked No. 34 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Rankings. Hobart will travel to Oberlin Saturday, Feb. 29, for a match at 10 a.m. On Sunday, they will face No. 9 Case Western Reserve at 8 a.m.
 
The Yeomen are coming off a 9-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan. Oberlin is led by Stephen Gruppuso who is 3-1 in the No. 1 spot. James Dill and Elliot Nuss are 5-4 overall in doubles play.
 
The Spartans broke into the Oracle/ITA top 10 after finishing fifth at the ITA Indoor National Championships. Case Western Reserve is led by James Hopper who has recorded an 18-3 overall singles record. Hopper and Matthew Chen are 18-2 overall in doubles play.
 
In November, senior Alan Dubrovsky was ranked 23rd nationally and 12th in the Northeast Region singles rankings. Dubrovsky and junior Walker Anderson are 15th in the national doubles rankings.
 
Hobart opened the season with the St. Lawrence Fall Classic where Dubrovsky captured A flight singles for the third consecutive year. Senior Joe Mallon won D flight singles, and Dubrovsky and first-year Kaan Ayman won A flight doubles. The Statesmen dropped a match to Amherst 8-1, and defeated Colby-Sawyer 9-0 to wrap up fall match play.
 
Dubrovsky and Anderson hold a team best 6-4 record in doubles play this season. They defeated the Chargers Matt Burke and Cam Lynch 8-1 after a loss to Amherst in their first two dual matches of the season. Dubrovsky and Anderson won the semifinal at the 2019 ITA Northeast Regional in September, qualifying for the 2019 ITA Cup in Rome, Ga.
 
Last year, Dubrovsky won the singles draw at the 2018 ITA Northeast Regional, and advanced to the ITA Cup where he finished fourth overall. With 73 career singles win, Dubrovsky is three wins away from breaking Hobart's career singles wins record. Hobart Hall of Famer Adam Schapiro '96 holds the current record with 75 career singles wins.
