ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The No. 22 William Smith College squash team earned their sixth straight win at the first day of the Liberty League Championship today. The Herons defeated No. 28 St. Lawrence 6-3, and they swept No. 33 Vassar 9-0.
First-year
Marcela Marquez Martinez increased her win streak to nine straight matches. She defeated the Saints' Sanna Koivumaki 11-9, 11-8, 11-5, and she downed the Brewers' Claire Coss 11-2, 11-1, 11-4 in the No. 1 spot.
In the first match of the day against St. Lawrence, senior
Karina Lazaro won the Herons' first match at No. 9. Marquez Martinez earned William Smith's second point, and first-year
Talia Welker defeated Gabrielle Ahrens in four games to earn another point for the Herons. Junior
Jo Pacheco won in three games at No. 3, and first-year
Maia Dreishpoon defeated Lindsay Whipple in four games. Senior
Gabby Fraser defeated Makayla Kelley 11-2, 11-7, 11-6 at No. 2. to secure the victory.
Fraser earned her 13th win of the season when she defeated the Brewers' Sydney Nemphos in the No. 2. spot. Sophomore
Molly Wachter won 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 at No. 3. Senior
Djeneba Ballo downed Samantha Henderson 11-5, 11-5, 11-6 at No. 4. First-years
Erin Griffis and Dreishpoon earned wins at Nos. 5 and 6 respectively. Lazaro and sophomore
Gretchen Vietor won in three games, and first-year
Aye Bah defeated Caitlin Lewis 11-3, 11-6, 11-6, at No. 9.
William Smith is currently leading the tournament at 2-0. Vassar and St. Lawrence are 1-1, and Bard is 0-2.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 9 for the second day of the Liberty League Championship. The Herons will play Bard at 9 a.m. at the Smith Squash Center.
