Box Score CANTON, N.Y.— The Hobart College tennis team opened the 2021-22 season with a strong performance at the 2021 St. Lawrence University Fall Classic this weekend. The Statesmen won two singles and one doubles flight at this year's tournament.
Thomas Shung claimed B Flight singles. Yesterday, he opened the tournament with an 8-2 victory over RIT's Jake Wolicki. In the quarterfinals, he topped Ithaca's Eric Dubilirer, 8-3. This morning he matched up with his teammate
Jack Ledford. Shung prevailed 8-2. In the championship match, he bested Eric Stein, 8-3. Ledford advanced to the semifinals with a pair of 8-5 wins over Cole Hamilton and Eric Dubilirer.
Troy Steiner also represented Hobart in B Flight. He won his collegiate debut, knocking off Adam Heilbronner 8-7(7-3). He was edged in the quarterfinals.
Nick Grosso impressed in his collegiate debut, winning C Flight Singles. He cruised to an 8-1 win over Ethan Chin. In the quarterfinals, he bested John Hill-Edgar, 8-3. Today in the semifinals he edged St. Lawrence's Broderick Pinto, 8-4. Grosso cruised past Edvin Strandberg, 8-2, in the championship match.
Hyat Oyer also competed in C Flight for Hobart. He reached the semifinals before losing to Strandberg. Oyer began his collegiate career with an 8-0 win over Ithaca's Tyler Del Zoppo. He then bested Nick Weitzman, 8-1.
Kaan Ayman,
Harry Lyu and
Winter Fagerberg competed in A Flight singles. Lyu advanced to the semifinals with wins over Pasquale Procaccino, 8-6, and Aidan O'Brien, 8-4. Fagerberg and Ayman won their opening matches but fell in the quarterfinals.
Rahul Vallabhajosula and
Leo Bakiri played in D Flight. Vallabhajosula won his first collegiate match, knocking off Ithaca's Max Sobel, 8-1. After losing his first match, Bakiri advanced to the semifinals of the consolation draw.
Steiner and Lyu teamed up to win A Flight doubles. In the opening round, they beat Rochester's Kai Yminaga and Krish Vennam 8-6. In the quarterfinals they beat Brian Wang and Ethan Chin, 8-3. Today in the semifinals they topped Connor Griff and Danny Tsyvin 8-7 (7-4). In the championship match, they squared off with their teammates, Ayman and
Jett Wright. Steiner and Lyu won 8-3. Shung and Fagerberg were also in A Flight doubles. They were eliminated in the semifinals by Ayman and Wright.
Ledford and Grosso and
Guthrie Speers and Oyer represented Hobart in B Flight. Ledford and Grosso reached the championship match where they were edged by Jacob Meyerson and Jake Wolicki, 8-5. Speers and Oyer were eliminated in the semifinals by Meyerson and Wolicki.
The Statesmen will be back in action Oct. 1-3 when they host the ITA Northeast Region Championships at the HWS Tennis Center.
